Compelling project overview

Overview

What a fascinating project and a practical contribution to ecosystem resilience. I am intrigued with how best to tell a solution story involving forests and ungulates, science and management techniques in such a way that is understandable and yet comes alive for viewers. I have a history of mammal/ecological coverage, albeit for national magazines, having researched and written features on caribou, orcas, wolves and an in-depth profile of a Quebec artist who paints moose portraits (for which I spent a week hunched in a canoe in the Gaspé). Each of these pieces was a deft blend of biology, ecological context and packaging for a general audience, which sounds remarkably like what’s needed for the MHE video.

As an experienced communicator I would be thrilled to create a compelling video about the project. While producing something that’s a blend of backgrounder, tutorial and concept validation within a 4-5 minute package is an interesting challenge I am certain that with quality interviews, captivating b-roll, tight edits and gripping music/graphics an engaging film can be produced.

Video Samples

approach

I would handle the assignment with a site visit in the initial phase followed by work in Victoria. Stage 2 involves a return to the PG area followed by post-production work in Victoria.

Proposed methods and critical path are outlined below (all dates are approximate).

Part 1: Video Preparation

Part 1 Discussion

Pre-interviews are vital for script development and storyboarding. Relationship building prior to putting a camera in front of someone also yields better tape. Seeing the shooting challenges on the ground will inform gear preparation. Distilling key messages, script writing, storyboarding and promotional strategy flows from a thorough knowledge of the project’s challenges, successes and wider implications.

August 15-23
Project briefing and foundational work
Meet and interview project leaders (in-person if in Victoria otherwise via Zoom)
Read all related project material
General discussion of existing goals and objectives
Reconnoitre on-camera shooting venues in the city

August 26-29
Initial trip
Meet and interview all key players in the area
Schedule (tentatively) on-camera interviews
Gather local media related to the project
Assess shooting terrain
Determine optimal on-camera interview locales

September 2-20
Script writing
Storyboarding
Marketing/promotional strategy and concepts
Reviewing, editing
Final project scope presentation and sign-off

Part 2: video production

Part 2 discussion

The longer window on-site in part 2 allows for weather delays, scheduling issues with interview subjects and serendipity. Shooting will be 4K with exceptional quality audio. Travel and location accommodation will be in my custom-built mobile studio.

September 25-October 2
Filming on-site
Video taping of interviews and b-roll including time lapse and drone
October 16
First cut of video – review and changes
October 23
Second cut – review and changes
Preparation, inventory and scheduling of marketing concepts
October 31
Final edit and delivery

I have years of experience in project design, management and execution. I am an all-media story teller with experience working in less-than-ideal circumstances. Not inconsequentially I am an outdoorsman and spend a lot time in wilderness settings. Just two years ago I was in the PG-Rupert area and have some understanding of what’s required to gather quality video in that landscape.

The majority of the project work would be undertaken by Bramwell Ryan. Supplemental editing and video graphics would be handled by Nick Johnston, a Winnipeg-based editor I have worked with for years. Graphic design elements would be undertaken by Bree Coderre, a Calgary-based designer I have worked with for years.

Cost Estimates

Corporate Work | Portfolio Samples

Part 1:
Travel: $2,500
Fee: $8,000

Total: $10,500

— — —

Part 2:
Travel: $2,800
Misc (gear, stock, music, graphics, SaaS): $6,500

Fee: $11,000

Total: $20,300

Notes on pricing: These cost estimates are approximate and may vary based on project realities. It assumes a fairly linear workflow with prompt sign-offs plus staff and interviewee availability. It is not clear to me the extent of the ”plan for promotion and distribution” outlined in the RFP. The assumption is that this will be a strategy document with the marketing execution handled by HCTF or a designate. All music, visuals and graphics used will be cleared of any copyright restrictions.
